14 DAY TRIAL // 2010 has been the year of surprising and extravagant wedding ceremonies (Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, Katy Perry and Russell Brand) but also one of shocking splits and cheating scandals.
Just to think that it started with more mistresses coming forward to speak of golfer Tiger Woods’ cheating ways, and one could almost say the entire year was marked by such celebrity scandals.
Think that, for instance, just as the Tiger Woods frenzy was starting to die down – at least to some extent – and the world was cheering for Sandra Bullock and her well-deserved Oscar win, word got out that her husband, Jesse James, had been having an affair with a tattoo model.
If anything, 2010 was the year when some A-listers saw their marriages come apart under the public glare, as partners to their spouses’ infidelities chose to go to the media to sell their story – and thus have everything come out into light.
TMZ’s Too Fab has a list of the most shocking celebrity splits of the year that’s about to end, listed in no particular order. A list of broken hearts, if you will.
We believe the Bullock-James split should come first, even if for the sole reason that the Woods scandal broke in November last year, on Thanksgiving eve, and it followed immediately after, as noted above.
Bullock is also the one who’s most deserving of praise for the way she handled the situation: not only did she not allow rumors about her personal life in the aftermath to end up in the tabloids, but she continued to live her life as discreetly as possible, and even went ahead and adopted a little baby boy.
For that, and for many other things, like continuing her charity work, she’s been praised repeatedly – and has even been named Time’s Person of the Year in one of its more recent issues.
Another unexpected divorce announcement came from Miley Cyrus’ parents. “Billy Ray Cyrus & Leticia Finley (Married in 1992) suddenly split when Billy filed for divorce in October,” Too Fab writes. No reason for the separation was given.
Another time-enduring couple to bite the dust in 2010 was that made of Courteney Cox and David Arquette, who told the media in October they wanted some time apart, but that they were not talking divorce just yet.
Shortly after, David admitted to cheating on Courteney with a waitress, and said that his wife had gotten tired of being a mother to him all the time. He’s been partying non-stop ever since.
Eva Longoria and Tony Parker also broke up in 2010, again amidst talk that he cheated on her. Reports say Eva found flirty and dirty text messages on his phone, but the alleged mistress has already denied she played any part in the dissolution of the marriage.
“Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, who started dating after meeting on the set of ‘High School Musical’ in 2005, split just weeks after going to Hawaii together,” Too Fab writes. They were one of Hollywood’s golden young couples.
“Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry, who started dating in 2005 and have a child together, split in April. She’s been seeing Olivier Martinez since. Aubry briefly dated Kim Kardashian,” Too Fab reports. They were always listed on the most beautiful couples list.
Another marriage that went south unexpectedly just recently is that of “Dexter” co-stars Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter, who announced their divorce one day after season 5 of the series concluded.
Since no one saw this coming, bad mouths attributed the split to co-star Julia Stiles’ involvement, who played Hall’s love interest and who was believed to have gotten romantic with him while shooting for the latest season. She denied all allegations in this sense.
“Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson, who wed in 2008, announced they plan to divorce in December. In a statement they said, ‘We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it’,” Too Fab says. Reports claim they simply drifted apart because of their work.
Mel Gibson and his Russian girlfriend and the mother of his eighth child Oksana Grigorieva also called it quits in 2010 – their breakup turned into a genuine media circus when audio of the actor verbally abusing Oksana leaked online. They’re still fighting each other in court for custody of baby Lucia.
“Christina Aguilera filed for divorce from husband Jordan Bratman in October. The couple, who married in 2005, has one child together. Aguilera is already dating a new guy, who also worked on ‘Burlesque’,” Too Fab writes. Bratman has slipped off the radar since.
