Singer Katy Perry and actor Russell Brand were married on Saturday night in a traditional Indian ceremony, a rep for the couple has confirmed for all the major media outlets.

People magazine reports that the couple, who announced their engagement in January this year after only four months of dating, pulled all the stops for the fancy ceremony, to which only close friends and family members were invited.

The groom, for instance, arrived on an elephant, the favorite mode of transportation for members of the royal family. A white horse could have also been an option, but was discarded in favor of the elephant.

While unconfirmed reports say Russell gave Katy a tiger as a wedding present, People says she too had to ride an elephant for the traditional wedding procession.

“They were pronounced Mr. and Mrs. Brand on Saturday, October 23. The very private and spiritual ceremony, attended by the couples’ closest family and friends was performed by a Christian minister and longtime friend of the Hudson Family,” a rep for the couple says.

“The backdrop was the inspirational and majestic countryside of Northern India,” the rep says in the same statement to People magazine.

Aside from having the groom come to meet the bride on an elephant, the ceremony also countless other things to make it quite a fairytale wedding, People writes.

“The sound of Indian instruments – including the sitar, the santoor, the tabla and kettle drums – and the singing of traditional Rajasthani folk musicians could be heard from deep inside the Aman-i-Khas resort, along with some sacred Vedic chanting and the occasional burst of applause and cheering by the guests,” the mag informs.

“At the entrance, the trees lining the path into the venue were lit up with white and gold lights,” says People.

Even before they became Mrs. and Mr. Brand, the two lovers kept to tradition, having a typical Bollywood pre-wedding party, complete with acrobats and traditional garb.

The morning after the wedding, the two stars took to their respective Twitter pages to spread the good news to their fans / followers, saying simply “WE DID!” and uploading a very cute TwitPic.
