Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless has finally decided to go official with the launch of a new 4G LTE-based smartphone, the DROID Charge by Samsung, which was unveiled during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, and which should be released on shelves on April 28th.

The new smartphone is expected to become available for purchase at the wireless carrier online through the company's website, as well as in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores around the country.

When launched, the new mobile phone would feature a price tag of $299.99 with the signing of a new two-year customer agreement with Verizon Wireless.

Some of the main features of the new device would include a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, which comes with impressive brightness, clarity and outdoor visibility, complemented by a fast 1GHz application processor.

The new DROID Charge by Samsung comes with an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with LED flash and HD video recording capabilities, and with a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera that enables video calling.

Some of the main features of the new device would include:

- 4G LTE– customers can expect download speeds of 5 to 12 Mbps and upload speeds of 2 to 5 Mbps in 4G Mobile Broadband coverage area - Adobe Flash Player compatible - Mobile Hotspot capability – share 4G connection with up to 10 WiFi-enabled devices or a 3G connection with up to 5 devices - Samsung Media Hub – Samsung's own content service, offering a vast lineup of critically acclaimed films and TV programs for rent or purchase - Virtual QWERTY Keyboard featuring Swype Technology

The new smartphone runs under Google's Android 2.2 platform, and offers support for Google Mobile Services like Gmail, YouTube, Google Talk, Google Search, Google Maps. It also provides support for applications available for download via the Android Market.

Verizon customers interested in the purchase of a DROID Charge would have to commit to a Verizon Wireless Nationwide Talk plan and a 4G LTE data package (the former start at $39.99 monthly access, while the latter start at $29.99 monthly access).
