If you haven't noticed by now 3D seems to be the new battleground for panel manufacturers, Samsung just announcing they are set to release a 70 inch 3D panels in the near future, this announcement coming just after AU Optronics announced their 71 inch 3D behemoth not more than a week ago.

Brought to our attention via the AkihabaraNews website, this announcement doesn't come with that many details regarding the new Samsung panels, although it discloses the fact that these future offerings will support 240Hz refresh rates, similarly to that of the previously announced 21:9 AUO panel.

This will however make use of a standard 16:9 aspect ratio, while also featuring a 800 million pixel resolution, this being made possible buy the use of oxide semiconductor TFTs, this technology also allowing manufacturers to offer improved static power consumption.

Furthermore, Samsung also states its next generation 70 inch 3D panels will come with an improved refresh rate, the Korean company stating future displays will reach a 480Hz refresh rate, a pretty impressive feat for such a large panel.

Improved 3D glasses will also come once these new 480Hz panels hit the streets, although Samsung hasn't mentioned what technology will they use for their 3D glasses.

AU Optronics panel used passive glasses in order to deliver the 3D effect, so Samsung could as well gain an advantage here if it went with active shutter glasses since these offer a far more immersive 3D effect than their passive counterparts.

As sparse as the specifications are, I think that it doesn't come as a huge surprise to anyone to know that Samsung has not yet released any infos regarding when will these panels arrive in 3DTVs.

Pricing is pretty much an unknown too at this point, although I can pretty much bet these will cost you an arm and a leg when they will come up.
