Mobile phone users who own a Symbian S60 5th Edition-powered handset have now two reasons to rejoice, as both a Facebook application especially developed for them and Flash Lite 3.1 are available, coming directly from Adobe. The new Facebook client can be found at the Ovi Store and comes as a Web Runtime widget, while Flash Lite can be updated to the latest version through the “App update” utility.

What the new Flash Lite 3.1 provides users of S60 5th Edition phones with includes improved web browsing (91% of top 500 Internet sites, says Adobe), Flash 9 (AS2 only) support, Local Connection / HTML Text / GetURL_target / CSS support / WMode, H.264 support, improved video support (smoothing, seek), improved memory handling for images, MP3 streaming support, support for hardware acceleration (Flash Lite 3.1 supports OpenVG 1.1 to improve flash rendering performance on capable devices), and Linux Reference port.

The best part about the new version of Flash Lite seems to be the fact that it can be easily installed and does not require a restart of the device. Those who would like to improve the flash performance of their device will only need to download and install a 700k file, and they will be able to enjoy a leveraged Internet experience on their handset right away.

As for the Facebook client for the OS, here is how the application is described at Ovi Store: “Facebook for Nokia S60 Touch lets you keep up with your friends right at your fingertips. Update your status, see what your friends are up to, upload photos, check messages and look up phone numbers when you need them anytime and anywhere. Facebook allows you to comment on your friend’s statuses, RSVP to event invites and confirm or deny friend requests. The Facebook for Nokia S60 brings Facebook directly to your phone. If Facebook is not available for your device, please check Ovi Store.”

Those who would like to try out the new Facebook application can find it as a free download on Ovi Store, which can be accessed either from a desktop PC, via this link, or directly from the mobile phone, here. The guys from All About Symbian already played around with the app and also published some shots with it, so you can see it at work here.
