Sprint gives a Pre for free

Palm's Pre is probably the most anticipated mobile phone this year, mainly due to the fact that its manufacturer, Palm, and the wireless carrier that will launch it exclusively in the United States, Sprint, haven't unveiled any details on the availability of the device on the market. For what it's worth, it might not be too long before the Palm Pre hits the shelves, as it started to make its appearance on the web in all kinds of forms.

The latest rumors point towards June 7 as the possible release date for the handset, while also unveiling the fact that Sprint might have partnered with Best Buy for this launch, something that might prove true in the end, as the retailer has recently posted a “teaser” page for the high-end mobile phone. At the same time, recent reports show that Best Buy will also receive all the accessories for the Palm Pre, and that it should have in stock the Touchstone wireless charger for the phone as soon as June 7, something that fueled once again rumors regarding the launch on that day.

The Palm Pre page on Best Buy doesn't give any details on the availability of the phone either, nor on a possible price tag it should come with; it only shows the specifications of the handset, which should already be known by now: the Palm webOS platform, 3.1-inch display with a 320 x 480 pixel resolution and 24-bit colors, touchscreen capabilities, a sliding QWERTY, GPS receiver, a 3-megapixel photo snapper with LED flash, Wi-Fi capabilities, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and A2DP, and 7GB of internal memory, coupled with support for USB mass storage.

In related news, we learn that Sprint plans on giving a Palm Pre for free, in a contest that will end on May 18. The end date for the contest has been correlated with recent rumors that the company plans to announce something about the phone on May 19 on WSJ, and there were some voices suggesting that it would be the availability of the phone, while others said that it could only be the winner of the above-mentioned contest. Those who would like to win a Pre should head to the carrier's website. The handset can be seen on Best Buy here.
