Although until a few hours ago The Carphone Warehouse was listing the Nexus S by Samsung as available for purchase on the UK market starting today, December 20th, users interested in the purchase of this device would have to wait two more days before the move is made.

According to an official announcement from The Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy, the release date for Nexus S in the UK has been pushed back, though the handset would still arrive on shelves in time for Christmas.

December 22nd is the new targeted launch day for Nexus S by Samsung, the first mobile phone to arrive on shelves with Google's new Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system on board.

The handset was already released in the United States, exclusively via Best Buy, and it was put on pre-order in the UK several days ago, but it seems that it would take a little longer before the handset lands on the local market.

Here's what the retailer announced in a press release (via Engadget):

"The Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy are today announcing that the Nexus S Smartphone from Google will arrive in the UK in time for Christmas at a great new price.

From 22nd December 2010, the only Smartphone running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) will be available to buy from The Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy. Due to strong customer interest, limited stock will be available to buy direct at key Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy stores in the UK.

All other branches of The Carphone Warehouse will be taking orders via instant ship delivery which will allow customers to pick up the phone from any store at their convenience. Customers can also order online at www.carphonewarehouse.com and www.bestbuy.co.uk."

While the delay might be upsetting, the announcement brings some good news as well, namely the fact that Nexus S' Pay As You Go price tag, along with the free of contract cost, were slashed by about £120:

"For those looking to upgrade, the Nexus S from Google will be available via direct sales on 0800 925 925. Nexus S will be available from free with a £30/month contract, or on PAYG for £429.99 plus £10 minimum top up with O2, Orange, Vodafone and T-Mobile.

In addition, the Nexus S Smartphone from Google will be available SIM free for £429.99."
