Starting today, mobile phone users in the United States are offered the possibility to purchase a new Android-based device, the Nexus S by Samsung, which is the first handset in the world to run under the new Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. The new mobile phone was put on sale in the country exclusively via Best Buy, which has it available both with a contract agreement on the airwaves of T-Mobile, as well as free of contract, though only with support for this carrier's 3G network.

Up until a few minutes ago, the handset was present on Best Buy's website with a coming soon tag attached to it, but the handset is now available for purchase.

The price tag for Nexus S was set at $529.99 in case one would like to have it unlocked, while the contract price is of $199.99.

The handset was made available for purchase via all Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores around the United States, as well as via the retailer's website, here.

According to the ordering page for this device, those who would purchase it now should receive it within 2-5 business days.

“The second-generation Nexus smart phone is loaded with great features and boasts Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), the newest version of Android,” Best buy notes on its website.

“Features include built-in mobile hotspot capability, improved voice action, better navigation and popular Google features like Gmail. Its sleek 4" WVGA contour display offers maximized visibility. The 5.0MP digital camera lets you snap great photos to share.”

The specifications list of this handset includes a 1GHz application processor, 16GB of built-in memory, the 4-inch touchscreen display that boasts a WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) resolution, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth connectivity, and more.

The Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS is another great feature of the device, as well as the included support for various services from Google' including Search, Gmail, or Google Maps.
