Even though neither the first teaser trailer nor the extended preview, the 9-minute prologue of “Star Trek Into Darkness” reveals the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch’s villain, the movie studio is doing that on its own.

Ever since J.J. Abrams started shooting for the sequel to the 2009 film, this has been one of the most fiercely guarded secrets.

For some reason, the studio is now willingly giving it away in the caption to the recently released still, which you can see in full if you click on the image above.

“(Left to right) Zachary Quinto is Spock, Benedict Cumberbatch is John Harrison and Chris Pine is Kirk in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS from Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions,” the caption reads.

Slash Film, which obtained the photo, notes that John Harrison, whoever he might be, is most likely a red herring, meant to distract fans from the more important issue of how much of “Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan” will be recognized in “Star Trek Into Darkness,” or some other, just as important, issue.
