Taiwan-based mobile phone maker HTC Corporation announced today the launch of its high-end highly-popular HTC HD2, available in Australia starting today, January 19, exclusively on Telstra’s Next G network, the largest network in the country. According to the company, the new handset, which boasts a large 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen display and a thin form factor, is expected to provide users with an enhanced experience when it comes to viewing rich content.

The HTC HD2 is one of the most advanced and intuitive phones HTC has ever created,” said Anthony Petts, sales and marketing director ANZ, HTC Corporation. “The phone provides users with the winning combination of Windows Phone functionality and one of the largest, most visually stunning capacitive touch displays available on the market. It is simply a joy to use.”

The HTC HD2 comes to the market running under Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system and is the first such device to also sport a capacitive touchscreen. The handset will offer a new experience when it comes to viewing, zooming and resizing websites, Microsoft Office files, PDF documents and pictures. At the same time, it will deliver a faster typing on its large display, not to mention that the 1 GHz Snapdragon mobile processor packed inside it results in enhanced performance when running applications, games, videos or more.

The phone further includes HTC's Sense solutions, which puts people in the center and is based on three main principles: Make it Mine, Stay Close and Discover the Unexpected. The WM 6.5 operating system on the phone also comes with a great deal of features, including Microsoft Exchange synchronization, access to the Windows Marketplace for Mobile or to the MyPhone backup service.

“We are pleased to continue our close working relationship with HTC to launch the HD2 which combines major advances in smartphone screen quality and processing power. With a processor that makes the HD2 almost twice as powerful as smartphones released just last year, customers can run popular apps like email, games and Windows applications faster and, importantly, simultaneously. Our fast, always 3G Next G network adds to the experience by making web applications like Facebook more responsive and web browsing effortless,” Ross Fielding, executive director, Telstra Wireless, Data, Applications and Services said.

Mobile phone users in Australia can purchase the HTC HD2 starting today, January 19, via Telstra T[life] stores, Telstra Shops and dealers. The RRP of HD2 has been set at $829, but users can also have it for free on an $80 plan over 24 months. It is available with Telstra Enterprise & Government and Telstra Business plans too, for free on a new $85 Mobile PLUS plan. Telstra's exclusivity on this handset will end on March 30, 2010.
