HTC EVO 3D and HTC Sensation, the latest flagship handsets from the Taiwanese mobile phone maker, have been already rooted, although only temporary root is available of them at the moment.

These handsets came to the market with Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and with high-end hardware packed inside, but they come with locked bootloaders, which is a deal breaker for many.

Of course, HTC did promise that unlocking solutions would arrive on both handsets via future software update but, until that happens, those who purchase one of the two are confined to the OS flavor the vendor provided and can use only approved software.

Unless they try out the temp root that just emerged for the two, it will be lost as soon as the handset is rebooted.

With root access, users can install unofficial applications on their devices, as well as custom ROMs, not to mention that they can also uninstall specific applications from the device, overclock the phone, and more.

With the new temp root in place, it will be easy to perform various root-only tasks, but, as soon as the handset is rebooted, users will need to re-root it. Hopefully, a permanent root will arrive in the near future, so that all this hassle will be put aside.

The temp root can be achieved using Windows, Max, and Linux based computers, the guys over at XDA-Developers note.

On Windows, users will simply have to download the necessary tool, reboot their handset and connect it to the computer, and then run root.bat to gain root access.

On Mac/Linux, things are a bit more complicated, as users will first need to ensure that ADB is in PATH (they can run ADB from anywhere through typing “adb”). They will have to extract the zip, then go to the specific folder and make sure the script has execute permissions.

After running chmod +x root code, they will have to connect the handset, and then execute the script that will provide them with root access to the phone: ./root.

All the necessary info on how to root the HTC EVO 3D and the HTC Sensation can be found in this thread over at XDA-Developers, along with the necessary downloadable files.

Users interested in rooting should keep in mind that they will do so at their own risk. They should also consider waiting for HTC to release the aforementioned unlocking solution for their handsets before making the move.
