Having only EA's boxing game Fight Night Round 3 on the fighting games list, Sony's PS3 is going to meet Virtua Fighter 5 real soon, as the game has gone gold. Sega announced a month ago that the Virtua Fighter 5 would arrive on US PlayStation3s on February 20, 2007, although the game was available in arcades all around Japan.

Virtua Fighter 5 was developed by Sega's popular internal AM2 studio and it is the latest game in Sega's Virtua Fighter series. It has five available game modes. The characters are both old ones from previous Virtua Fighter games like Pai Chan and Wolf Hawkfield as well as new ones like Monkey Kung Fu and El Blaze who is a lucha libre wrestler and wears a mask. Blaze is a quicker fighter who uses acrobatic and gymnastic moves to fight and throw opponents; he seems to have some sort of rivalry with the existing character Wolf Hawkfield.

It is currently announced only for the PS3 and still has a long time to wait to make it on the Xbox 360 platform as it is scheduled for fall this year.

At the "beginning of time" (1993) Virtua fighter was the very first 3D-based fighting game. It has been ported to several home video game consoles including the Sega Saturn and Sega 32X. A port with enhanced graphics was also released for Microsoft Windows. The game is highly regarded for its in-depth fighting engine and real world fighting techniques, and was considered revolutionary when it first appeared.

Of course things are a little different now and 3D isn't such an amazing feature anymore as the main concerns are now gameplay and player customization which make the most of Virtua Fighter 5.
