Not many may remember the original Carrier Command released in 1988, but, for those that do, Bohemia Interactive Studio and Black Element Software have some truly amazing news. Another game in the same universe is under development and what's even more important is that it's fully licensed and endorsed by the original creators. Carrier Command: Gaea Mission has been confirmed for a spring 2010 release on the PC and other consoles, but which exactly these consoles are isn't specified yet.

Carrier Command doesn't really fit Bohemia Interactive's portfolio, as far as previously released titles and their genre goes, considering that its previous releases are made up by Operation Flashpoint and the ArmA series. Even so, CEO Marek Spanel believes that its individual experience with the game is more than enough. "When we first heard about the opportunity to develop a game based on the original Carrier Command, we were instantly hooked," Spanel said.

"For us, Carrier Command was not only one of the most innovative games we had ever played but it is also one of the very few games that truly influenced our gaming tastes and motivated us in our own home grown game development, which later materialized in the form of Operation Flashpoint, with similar open ended gameplay and emphasis on a deeply simulated game world."

Black Element Software didn't let itself be outdone in compliments for the original game, and Otakar Nieder, Gaea Mission's project leader, said that, "Having the opportunity to create an actual Carrier Command game is not only a great honor for us, but it also allows us to take the legendary title we all love and do it justice with a truly next-gen rendition."

But, even if the gameplay seems to be the main focus of the developing team, that doesn't mean that the story is getting anything less than a front-row seat. The game's plot will be an adaption of the second novel of the science-fiction trilogy. The main characters of the title will be a crew that wakes up from a 30-year-long hyper sleep only to find itself in the middle of a war that stretches all the way from the Earth to the first human colony established in another solar system. "The vivid writing and compelling characters help us set this game in a believable universe and provides a strong Sci-Fi plot for the player's immersion," Spanel explained.
