Notifications now coming as expected on the October update

Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 cumulative update KB4476976 for version 1809 (October 2018 Update) earlier this week, and as revealed in the changelog, it brought quite a lot of fixes to devices already updated to this new release.

But one fix that wasn’t included appears to concern an older notification bug that Microsoft has never acknowledged, yet which impacted quite a lot of devices.

As we reported back in October, a Windows 10 version 1809 issue was causing the Action Center to no longer display notifications (and to sometimes show up from the left side of the screen).

Microsoft has always remained tight-lipped about this problem, but as discovered by TechDows recently, the unexpected behavior was fixed with cumulative update KB4476976.

While a confirmation in this regard hasn’t been provided, Microsoft not saying anything about a potential fix makes sense especially because the bug wasn’t acknowledged in the first place. On the other hand, cumulative updates typically come with more under-the-hood refinements than the release notes reveal, so there’s a chance this is the case as well here.

The October update bug hunting effort

Windows 10 October 2018 Update is currently in the automatic rollout phase, meaning that Microsoft is making it available for users as an automatic download via Windows Update.

The update was first published in early October but pulled shortly after that due to a critical issue hitting files stored in libraries.

The rollout was resumed in November, and Microsoft made another step towards broad availability in December when it started allowing all users to download the update with a manual check for updates in Windows Update.

In the meantime, there still are bugs to be fixed in version 1809, and this is the purpose of cumulative updates. New such updates are expected in February as part of the next Patch Tuesday cycle.
