This means that everyone gets updates at the same time

If you’re a long-time Windows Phone user, you probably know that, in some cases, it could take many months before you actually receive an OS update, and the release of the Lumia Denim is living proof that the wait can be painfully long.

But Microsoft is very close to getting rid of this often-criticized update system for its phones with the release of Windows 10 Mobile, and version 10586.29 could be the very first release towards a completely new approach.

Today, Microsoft has rolled out Windows 10 Mobile build 10589.29 for Lumia 950, 950 XL, and 550 devices enrolled or not in the Windows Insider program, so right now, the very same version is available not only for phones participating in this effort but also for PCs upgraded to Windows 10.

Basically, right now, PCs and mobile phones are all running the same version of Windows 10, namely 10586.29, and Terry Myerson, head of the OS group at Microsoft, has said that from now on updates will try to keep all devices in sync and arrive at the same time for everyone.

“Big day, first update worldwide (and more to come) to all phones running #Windows10 - same build as PC!” Myerson explains.

Not everyone getting the Lumia 950 update, though

Although this strategy is supposed to work flawlessly and make the latest versions of the OS available for everyone, some Lumia 950 and 950 XL are not yet getting 10586.29 due to what seems to be a problem.

Microsoft has already acknowledged it and promised to provide a fix very soon, which is clearly critical to the final success of this new strategy.

But in the end, there’s no doubt that making updates available for users without the need for carrier approval is what everyone expects, especially because Windows 10 Mobile is part of the Windows as a Service strategy that’s supposed to get patched and improved much more often than before. On mobile, however, these are just the very first steps, so hopefully, Microsoft will do more to make it more effective once Windows 10 Mobile comes to the market.
