Carrier-branded units are getting the update as well

Microsoft has just started the rollout of the latest Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.29 to Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL that are not enrolled to Windows Insider program.

The update has been available until recently to all those that opted into the Insider program. Although Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL were not compatible with Microsoft's testing program, the Redmond-based company added support for both smartphones over the weekend after updating the Windows Device Recovery Tool.

Today, the folks over at WindowsCentral report that all Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL have started to receive build 10586.29 update regardless of whether or not they have been opted in Windows Insider program.

The good news is Microsoft is rolling out the update to all Lumia 950/950 XL devices, even to those sold through various carriers.

For the time being, the AT&T version of Lumia 950 has been confirmed to receive the update without being enrolled in the Insider program, but other carrier-branded units might get it as we speak as well.

Is Microsoft removing carriers from the equation?

It appears that Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.29 is the first update that confirms Microsoft's strategy of controlling all software update for its smartphones, thus skipping carriers in the rollout process.

This means that unlocked and carrier-branded Lumia smartphones might receive important Windows 10 Mobile updates at the same time, in the future.

Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.29 is very important for Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, as it brings much-needed bug fixes and improvements. There aren't any new features in this build, but this is not what the new version of the OS needs right now.

We're preparing our own Lumia 950 XL review, which should be published sometime this week, but if you want to read our first impressions, feel free to check it out and post your comments.
