The first commercial attempt at a modular smartphone

Since the first rumors about LG G5's semi-modular design emerged online a few months ago, many have been quite reserved.

The chance that a major player in the smartphone business will launch a flagship with modular design, as unlikely as it might have seemed some weeks ago, it's been confirmed by the latest pictures and information about the LG G5.

It all started from a render based on the description of a prototype unit that someone held in hand several weeks ago. Earlier today, the first clear picture of the LG G5 shows us both sides of the smartphone, including what appears to be a removable bottom side.

If you had any doubts that LG G5 will feature a semi-modular design, another picture showing the so-called Magic Slot has just been leaked by the folks at Nowhereelse.fr.

A genuinely innovative feature coming our way soon

The Magic Slot feature allows users to replace some of the features inside the LG G5, such as the battery, with new ones that otherwise would not be available.

According to the latest rumors, there will be a few official accessories for LG G5 that will be presented later this weekend at MWC 2016.

A camera grip that will contain an extra 1,100 mAh battery can be inserted in the Magic Slot without having to pull out the smartphone's main battery.

Another plug-in module that will be unveiled in just a few days is a DAC (digital audio chipset) that will enhance the LG G5's audio features.

This particular DAC has been developed by the joint efforts of LG and Bang & Olufsen, as announced earlier today in an official statement.

Last but not least, a VR camera might be announced as well. The camera will be fully compatible with LG G5, but it will be controlled independently, as there's no need to attach it to the smartphone.
