The smartphone is rumored for unveiling in late February

The next couples of months will be very busy for major handset makers like Samsung and LG as both companies prepare to launch their flagship smartphones for the first half of the year.

We already know Samsung plans to unveil the Galaxy S7 on February 20, but rumor has it that LG might crash the South Korean's launch party with its own announcement of the G5.

LG usually unveils its flagship smartphones a few months after Mobile World Congress trade fair, which usually takes place in late February – early March.

However, as an LG exec suggested a few days ago, the company is ready to take on Samsung, which is why it might have decided to launch the G5 during the same timeframe as the Galaxy S7.

If the G5 is to compete with Samsung Galaxy S7, LG needs something that would allow its flagship smartphone to stand out from other high-end devices available on the market.

According to a new report coming from CNET Korea (via 9to5google), LG G5 will feature a metal unibody modular design. This means that users will be able to completely detach the battery inside the smartphone and add another one.

The battery might be the only detachable part of the phone

There aren't any modular smartphones available on the market since the Israelian company Modu had gone bankrupt several years ago, but Google is working on Project Ara, which aims at providing a modular handset for commercial use in the next couple of years.

The LG G5 would feature a semi-modular design since the battery, along with the bottom side of the phone, would be the only detachable parts.

The picture showing what the LG G5 might look like has been rendered based upon an eyewitness testimony, and it's the only image of the unannounced smartphone that we have until now.

If LG is indeed planning to announce the G5 in late February, we expect more details on the upcoming flagship to start emerging online.

In the same piece of news, the HTTP user agent profile for an unannounced LG smartphone that runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow has just popped up online.

The user agent profile mentions a device with model number LG-H830, which could be the G5 flagship smartphone. Previous model numbers for the company's flagships include LG-H810, LG-G811, LG-H812, and LG-G815.
