Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless has just unveiled that it aims at making the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY smartphone available for purchase on its airwaves as soon as May 26th.

However, users interested in the purchase of this device won't have to wait so long for it to become available, as pre-orders are set to be come available as of May 19th, the carrier announced.

When released, the new device would be priced at $199.99 with a new two-year customer agreement. Users would be able to pre-order it via all Verizon Wireless stores around the country, as well as through the carrier's online store.

The handset arrives on shelves with a fast 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon II processor with Adreno 205 GPU, along with a 4-inch multi-touch display, complemented by a sliding game pad with the PlayStation symbol keys on it: circle, X, square and triangle.

“The Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY, for Verizon Wireless, redefines mobile gaming by combining all the features customers expect from a fully-featured smartphone with the ultimate gaming experience,” the operator notes.

The specifications list of the new mobile phone would also include a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, with video recording capabilities, along with VGA front-facing camera for video chatting.

The mobile phone also arrives on shelves with Support for Google Mobile Services including Gmail, YouTube, Google Talk, Google Search, Google Maps, and access apps available to download from Android Market.

“The gaming experience can only get better as additional games are being created,” the mobile phone carrier continues.

The mobile phone runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, and comes pre-loaded with games like Madden NFL 11 (EA Sports), Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior (Digital Legends), Asphalt 6: Adrenaline (Gameloft), The Sims 3 (EA), Star Battalion (Gameloft), Crash Bandicoot (Sony PlayStation) and Tetris.
