Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson is reportedly gearing up for the release of a new Xperia device, one that would be closely related to Xperia arc, and which was already spotted in Japan as the Xperia Acro.

The new mobile phone made an appearance in the Sony Ericsson PC Companion software in the country, and is expected to hit the shelves either as arc's twin, or as its cousin.

According to some of the reports available on this, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Acro is expected to arrive on shelves as a thicker flavor of the already made official handset.

Even so, some info on the specifications list of the new device did emerge, including the fact that would boast a 1GHz Snapdragon application processor inside.

The handset should sport a 4.2-inch touchscreen display, as well as an 8.1-megapixel Exmor R photo snapper, which would bring it even closer to the Xperia arc.

On the other hand, the device is also said to include NFC support, as well as TV Tuner and infrared capabilities. The last two are among the most popular features that Japanese users are looking for in their devices.

It appears that the Sony Ericsson Xperia Acro might have been set to hit the shelves in Japan sometime in the second quarter of the ongoing year, though no confirmation on this emerged for the time being.

The available list of specs on this device suggest that it would be destined for the airwaves of both NTT DOCOMO and KDDI, since there are two flavors of the device spotted, one with GSM capabilities, and another one with CMDA connectivity.

The same as with the latest Xperia devices, the new smartphone is expected to run under Google's Android operating system, though it remains to be seen which exact flavor of the platform it would sport. Keep an eye on this space for additional info on the matter.
