Mobile phone carrier Vodafone UK has just announced the availability of a new software update for one of the high-end smartphones available on its airwaves, the HTC Desire HD, providing its owners with the much-anticipated Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system flavor.

The handset was released during the fourth quarter of the last year with the Android 2.2 Froyo OS on board, but HTC promised the availability of a Gingerbread update for it, and the company started to deliver the software a few days ago.

Vodafone is the first wireless carrier to announce the availability of this update for its customers, but more operators are expected to start delivering it in the near future.

“A new maintenance release for the HTC Desire HD is now available to our customers. This update is an Android platform update to Gingerbread and introduces a number of fixes and improvements,” Vodafone announced.

The new software is being delivered to users as an over-the-air update. As soon as it is available for a specific device, users would receive a notification on the matter.

However, they can also perform manual checks to see whether it was released for their handsets or not, through going to MENU> Settings> About Phone> System software updates, where they would have to tap on Check now.

Some of the main enhancements the new software brings into the mix would include:

- Enhancements to the user interface (simpler and slicker) - New Android Keyboard, with easy copy/paste feature - Improved Power Management - Internet Calling support - Multiple Camera Management (front and back)

Following the update, Vodafone UK users would have their devices running under software version 2.36.161.12.

To check the version of the software currently on the device, one would need to go to MENU> Settings> About Phone> Software Information> Software number.

Before proceeding with the update, users should back up all data on their devices, so as to make sure that no important files are lost during the process. You can read more on the matter on Vodafone's website here.
