Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC corporation has just announced the availability of new software updates for two of its high-end smartphones based on Google's Android platform, namely the Desire HD and Incredible S.

The new update should be delivered to users over the air, and comes with a new OS flavor into the mix, Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Both HTC Desire HD and HTC Incredible S were launched on the market with the Android 2.2 Froyo platform on board, but the new features that Google loaded with Gingerbread are available for their users as well, it seems.

“Your phone will receive a notification of FOTA update when it is made available. Simply press OK to accept the update via a data connection such as Wi-Fi or GPRS/3G,” the handset vendor notes on its support website.

“Please back up your data first before upgrading your phone. We recommend using a free Wi-Fi hotspot or an unlimited data plan to apply this update. If not, standard data connection charges may apply,” the company continues.

The mobile phone maker also notes that, as soon as the update was installed on these handsets, users should be able to confirm a successful update through checking the Build number (MENU> Settings> About Phone> Software Information> Software number).

On HTC Desire HD, the Build number after the update will be 2.36.405.5. On Incredible S, it should be 2.12.405.7.

Since the new software would bring the Gingerbread OS flavor on handsets, all of the features that this platform version packs inside would be there, but HTC did not offer details on other enhancements that might have been included with the software.

While there's no specific mentioning on this, we might assume that the OTA update will arrive only on unlocked devices for the time being, and that handsets available on the networks of various wireless carriers would receive it at a later date.

The software might soon become available for download from the web too, so that users would be able to perform manual updates of their devices, without having to wait for the file to arrive OTA.
