According to the latest news on the Web, Verizon Wireless has recently approved a firmware upgrade for the HTC Touch Pro, one that comes to users with a number of three major improvements. The first of the features that the firmware version 1.08 brings is the long-awaited unlocked GPS support.

This comes to the HTC Touch Pro as part of the already promised upgrade to three devices, including the Samsung Saga and Samsung Omnia, and it seems that the upgrade enables standard GPS functionality on a series of services such as Google Maps and Windows Live Search for Mobile.

The second improvement that is reported to come to the HTC Touch Pro available with Verizon consists of the addition of Visual Voicemail support to the handset. The aforementioned Samsung Omnia already sports the Visual Voicemail, which, as it happens with other Verizon mobile phones as well, will cost users $3/month.

The last feature that comes to Touch Pro along with firmware version 1.08 is the addition of EVRC-B codec support. EVRC-B comes as the second revision to the EVRC voice calling codec, and is part of the fourth generation of voice codecs (4GV) from Qualcomm. The addition is meant to improve the management of calls on the network when in high-demand situations.

We're not sure when the mobile phone carrier will start offering the update for the HTC Touch Pro, yet it seems that those who would like to try it can do so already, courtesy of PhoneNews.com. The update seems to have been approved by all those involved in the process, including PCD, HTC, and Verizon, so you might want to head to the download page to try it out for yourselves. Just back up your data before proceeding with the update, so as to make sure that no important files on your phone are lost.
