Trimble announced that its indoor Global Positioning System (GPS) timing solution will be used for Samsung's new Ubicell system - a mini wireless base station that improves mobile coverage inside the home. The indoor GPS timing solution will be used to synchronize the Ubicell system to the communications network.

Also known as a femtocell, the Ubicell solution uses Access Point Base Station technology to improve mobile CDMA coverage in areas with little connectivity. Ubicell is slightly larger than a Wi-Fi access point and connects to the mobile carrier's network using the user's home broadband connection, creating a mini cellular station in the user's home.

The Ubicell femtocell is easy to install and features automatic configuration, remote operation and maintenance. The plug-and-play system only requires a broadband (xDSL or Cable Modem) connection and household power. After installation, the Ubicell automatically locates and registers with the management server for configuration and can begin service in a matter of minutes. A mobile handset does not require any special technology to use the system. For security purposes, only four or less devices can be connected to the cell.

"We are extremely pleased to extend our relationship with Samsung by providing our indoor GPS timing solution for the Ubicell system," said Karen Guldan, director of Trimble's Timing products. "Femtocell access points offer wireless network operators the opportunity to address the fixed mobile convergence (FMC) market with a highly attractive and efficient solution. They provide savings on infrastructure costs for operators and can improve in-home coverage for consumers by utilizing a broadband Internet connection."

GPS clocks and timing boards provide superior performance for precise timing applications such as maintaining CDMA holdover specifications, Enhanced 911 location positioning using Time Difference of Arrival, maximizing bandwidth for Wireless Local Loops, WiMax and broadcasting (DAB, DVB and VSAT). Trimble provides GPS timing solutions for some of the largest communications and computer networking companies.
