The BlackBerry Torch 9800, the first smartphone from Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion to arrive on the market with the new BlackBerry 6 OS on board, is now available for purchase in the UK via wireless carrier Three UK.

The new device was launched with a sliding design, bringing together a touchscreen display and a portrait sliding QWERTY keyboard, a first to the BlackBerry family.

The new device arrives at Three in black, and can be purchased for £249 on a £35 per month contract on The One Plan (includes 2000 any network minutes, 5000 Three-to-Three minutes, 5000 texts and 1GB data).

“When paired with Three’s high speed network, the BlackBerry Torch really comes into its own, allowing users to access their favourite web pages and social networking sites with ease,” Sylvia Chind, Head of Branded Devices at Three said.

The new mobile phones offers users the possibility to stay in touch with friends and family via various communication channels, including messaging, calls, or social networking.

On Three UK's network, the Torch 9800 comes with free Twitter and Windows Live Messenger, as well as with access to various other connectivity options, including BlackBerry Messenger, Email, or the BlackBerry App World.

Some of the main features of the new device include a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen display, a 5.0-megapixel photo snapper with auto focus, LED flash, and video recording capabilities.

Moreover, the new slider sports HSDPA connectivity options, 4GB of internal memory, and a battery that can offer up to 340 minutes of talk-time, or up to 14 days of standby time.

In addition to the new launch, the wireless carrier also announced that BlackBerry Curve 9300 is now available for purchase for its customers on a new BlackBerry Pay As You Go (PAYG) offering.

This would offer customers the possibility to enjoy all the features BlackBerry services come with (including BlackBerry Email, Messenger and App World) without having to commit to a monthly contract.

“With the growth of our 3G network across the UK, we want to give more people access to our smartphones and services, so opening the BlackBerry range up to PAYG customers was an easy decision for us,” Sylvia Chind continued.

“Providing new BlackBerry owners with more flexibility than before, PAYG customers can enjoy Three’s award winning network.”

The BlackBerry Curve 3G would be available on Three’s All in One plan that offers great value starting at £10: 3,000 texts, 100 minutes and 500MB data. “Pay As You Go subscription to BlackBerry services then costs £5 and lasts for 30 days,” the carrier announced.
