Recently, Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion has made available for download a new operating system version for its latest BlackBerry smartphone, the BlackBerry Torch 9800.

The new handset, the first device at RIM to sport a sliding form factor, and also the first one to run under the Blackberry OS 6 platform, has received an update to OS 6.0.0.246, as the handset vendor's support website shows.

The mobile phone, RIM's first smartphone to put together a touchscreen display with a QWERTY keyboard, arrived on shelves with OS 6.0.0.141 on board.

According to some of the latest reports on the matter, the software on Torch 9800 was quite buggy, thus the need of an operating system upgrade so soon after the official launch.

It appears that some of the reported issues with the smartphone included glitches in the scrolling, along with a series of critical screen failures at certain times.

However, the new OS 6.0.0.246 software update is supposedly meant to fix all of these issues, as well as other bugs the initial firmware included, and is available for download from the handset vendor's support website.

The new software solution was released for the owners of BlackBerry Torch 9800 on three wireless carriers on the North American continent, including AT&T, Rogers and TELUS.

As stated above, the firmware update has been listed on Research In Motion's website, and all the necessary info on it can be found there.

Interestingly enough, the solution weighs in at 161.7MB for AT&T and Rogers, while going up to 177.78MB for TELUS' BlackBerry Torch devices.

Those who would like to check on the Software Platform and Applications version numbers on their devices can do so through heading to Options-About screen on the handset.

The update can be performed via a desktop computer, on which users would have to have the BlackBerry Desktop Software installed.

OS 6.0.0.246 is available for download from RIM's website here, here and here, for AT&T, Rogers and TELUS, respectively.
