Sporting a large viewfinder for better snapshots

Pei-Hua Huang, an Industrial Design grad of NC State Univesity has come up with a concept phone that bears a rather suggestive name, 'What You See Is What You Get'. It was designed with the purpose of providing something new and different and looking for further possibilities of future cell phones.

Instead of depending on the screen to see what you're taking a snapshot of, the concept phone brings along a pretty new idea, that of using the transparent frame, that it includes as a viewfinder, thus being able to take a photo of exactly the thing you're looking at.

So, basically, half the phone is a viewfinder, while the other half houses a touchscreen display with a QVGA resolution that can apparently adapt to all the needs a user would have, including providing a keypad for text input. A 50mm equivalent camera is embedded in the clear section (viewfinder) that will allow taking snapshots at a resolution of up to 3 megapixels.

Its design is also quite appealing as the WYSIWYG phone comes with a metallic frame and various coating. It looks reasonably slim and quite stylish. According to its designer, it should measure around 120 x 50 x 8 mm. Last but not least, it can even match the user's outfit, being presented in several versions including leather and chrome, jeans cloth and stainless steel, Asian cloth and aluminum or carbon fiber and black steel.

Don't hold your breath on seeing this concept become an actual product though. Although interesting, most concept phones never make it out of the project phase and into shops.
