Talk about confidence: the new rebooted “Spider-Man” is not even out in theaters – and won’t be so for longer – and Sony Pictures has already greenlighted a sequel. It will be out in May 2014, it has emerged.

As fans must already know, the new “Spider-Man” film marks a departure from the previous releases with Tobey Maguire in the lead, introducing Andrew Garfield in the role of the superhero, in a different take on the story inspired from the popular comics.

Some fans have already expressed their belief that “there can only be one Super-Man” and he’s Maguire, but Sony would beg to differ: the movie studio is so confident in the success of the film, it’s already planning a sequel, AceShowbiz informs.

“Although the Andrew Garfield-starring movie is still a year away from its US release date, Sony have already greenlit a sequel for the superhero film. ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ is expected to hit theaters two years after the first one,” the e-zine reports.

Confirmation on the sequel has already been made by a Sony executive, who is quoted as saying, “I think it speaks volumes about our confidence in what we are seeing on the new film and our desire to move quickly on the next installment.”

“They plan to release the second movie across the United States on May 2, 2014 to kick off the summer of 2014,” AceShowbiz adds.

The rebooted “Spider-Man,” called “The Amazing Spider-Man,” will hopefully relaunch the franchise at Sony, after the third film with Maguire was deemed a disappointment with fans and critics alike.

It comes out in July 2012 and, as noted above, stars Garfield (“Never Let Me Go”) as the nerdy Peter Parker / Spider-Man, while Emma Stone, his real-life rumored girlfriend, will play Gwen, Parker’s love interest in the comics, before Mary Jane.

Also attached to the project is another British actor, Rhys Ifans, who will play the film’s villain, Dr. Lizard.
