Only for military use

The Pip Boy 3000 is quite a nice gadget and players of Fallout 3, the post apocalyptic role playing game from Bethesda, rely on it for a lot of information and tracking everything from quest lines to the weight of the equipment carried around.

Too bad it’s entirely fictional. Or is it not? Zypad is introducing the WR1100, a device destined for military use that weighs just over 600 grams and seems to be quite close to being a clone of the Pip Boy 3000. It’s designed to resist water, sand and dirt and features a 640 x 480 screen, readable in direct sunlight, while running a Linux operating system.

Here’s a quote directly from the developer of the Zypad WR1100 showcasing a few other features that the real life Pip Boy 3000 includes, “802.11 and Bluetooth/Zigbee interfaces, a GPS receiver, electronic compass, biometric fingerprint sensor, and a tilt and dead reckoning system that detects the position of the user’s arm and sets the system to standby mode when the arm is hanging down beside the body.”

So, you can basically connect this gadget to all other personal computing devices that have a Bluetooth interface, you can always tell where you are, with increased accuracy, you can find your way around an area thanks to the compass, while also looking a lot like the unnamed Vault dweller that plays such an important role in the history of the Capitol Wasteland in Fallout 3.

It would be quite cool to see Bethesda release a new, special edition of Fallout 3 complete with one of these devices. After all, with the military-oriented stuff taken out of it, the Zypad WR1100 could be quite an interesting gadget to own for a gamer, especially if the Pip Boy interface is faithfully recreated.
