Synology has just announced that the company has prepared a new series of high-end network attached storage (NAS) devices that can scale to over 100TB in capacity and are meant to be used in small and medium enterprises.

The so-called xs series is comprised of two new NAS servers, the DiskStation DS3611xs and the RackStation RS3411xs/RS3411RPxs, the first offering 12 SATA drive bays, while the latter features a 10-bay design.

Both solutions are powered by dual-core Intel processors that operate at 3.1GHz and are paired together with 2GB of DDR3 ECC RAM (upgradeable to 8GB) and motherboard using Intel 200 Series chipsets.

According to Synology, this powerful configuration enables the two NAS servers to deliver data throughput in excess of 1,000MB/sec and 100,000 IOPS when link aggregation is enabled.

Speaking of link aggregation, connectivity options include four Gigabit Ethernet ports, but users can also opt for configuring the devices with an optional 10GbE X2 add-on card, which should increase performance significantly.

Compared to its smaller brother, the rackable RS3411RPxs, and its expansion unit the RX1211RP, can be configured with redundant power supplies in order to ensure continual service uptime.

As far as power consumption is concerned, Synology's NAS servers consume up to 128W in operation and 78W when hibernated. Once Deep Sleep mode is enabled, the expansion units, including DX1211 and RX1211/RX1211RP, reduce up to 95% of power consumption.

“The xs series NAS servers are designed to scale up both storage capacity and performance in accordance with businesses’ growth,” said Derren Lu, CEO of Synology Inc.

“Synology transforms costly and unattainable technology into the xs series NAS servers that are economical and easy to approach,” concluded the company's rep.

The Synology xs series NAS servers will be available for purchase shortly. Prices will stay under the $5,000 US mark.
