Having an item that qualifies as the world's first or world's greatest in a particular category is something any IT company wants, and it looks like Synology didn;t quite succeed in something of the sort, although its newest rack-mount NAS does take the lead as far as its own solutions go.

Synology is a company known for its various storage devices, most of which are of the NAS variety (network-attached storage).

Apparently, it is this very sort of product, or products in this case, that the outfit now launched, according to its new press release.

Simply put, the company created two rack-mount NAS devices dubbed RS2211RP+ and its companion RX1211RP, the former being the largest of its collection to date.

They can pack up to 22 storage drives when combined and have multiple benefits, like affordability, performance and redundant power supplies, for maximum uptime.

The performance capabilities belong to the RS2211RP+ itself, while the RX1211RP expansion module is basically a means to add 12 extra drives, with the connection is made through an infiniband cable, which reaches 12 Gbps transfer.

That said, the rack-mount NAS has 10 bays of its own, a read speed of up to 198 MB/s and a maximum write speed of 166 MB/s.

All in all, the maximum storage achievable when all 22 bays are filled is of 66 TB, configurable in RAID and running DiskStation Manager software (DSM) 3.1.

"This new RackStation makes for a very affordable addition to the server room," said Doug Self, product marketing manager at Synology America Corp. "The performance and scalable capacity can't be beat in this price range."

The RS2211RP 2U High performance NAS Server for enterprise users can be studied in detail on its official product page, while the RX1211RP 2U 12-Bay Expansion Unit has ihs own product page here.

Set to start shipping around mid or late April, the price should be of less than $3,000.

UPDATE: Corrected from world's largest to Synology's largest rack-mount NAS.
