The viral campaign and the hype created with the help of several mysterious trailers have finally paid off: J.J. Abrams’ latest film, “Super 8,” opened big in the US, landing at the number 1 spot at the domestic box office.

Apparently, the secrecy around the real plot of the film helped a lot with sales, even if most members of the audience already suspected what it was all about – and a leaked 6-minute footage showed them they were right.

Abrams’ pull on the audience was so big that “Super 8” even managed to push last week’s number one, “X-Men: First Class,” to the second position, AceShowbiz reports.

“With the winning formula made of a mix of sci-fi suspense and coming-of-age drama, the mysterious ‘Super 8’ urges ‘X-Men: First Class’ to sit at the second spot. This mutant-themed movie drops an estimated 54.6% from last weekend’s total, or obtains about $25 million,” the e-zine notes.

Indeed, though it launched to very positive reviews, it would seem that the “X-Men” reboot did not quite fare as spectacularly as industry insiders believed it would, though it will undoubtedly still be a sound commercial release.

On the third spot we find the biggest comedy opening ever in the history of cinematography, “The Hangover 2,” which made another $18.5 million and further confirmed that, regardless of what critics say, the franchise is a huge hit with audiences.

“Kung Fu panda 2” also brought in the big bucks, making another $16.6 million in ticket sales, while the latest “Pirates of the Caribbean” installment, “On Stranger Tides,” rounds up the top five with $10.8 million.

The rest of the top 10 movies at the US box office are as follows: “Bridesmaids” ($10.2 million), “Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer” ($6.3 million), “Midnight in Paris” ($6.1 million), “Thor” ($2.4 million) and “Fast Five” ($1.7 million).
