Director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg have been secretly working on a super secret project (emphasis on “secret”) called “Super 8.” Fans got a first taste of it with a 30-second teaser at the Super Bowl and now, the first official trailer is out.

When word got out of the film a while back, many believed that Abrams was working on a possible sequel or prequel to the 2008 “Cloverfield,” the best example of how a massive and successful viral campaign for a film should be conducted.

Abrams put those rumors to rest but still refused to elaborate more on his project. The Super Bowl teaser did little to shed more light on it – but hopefully the trailer below will do just that.

With it, Paramount has also released the official synopsis for the film and, as expected, it doesn’t say a word more about the plot than the trailer, as EW also points out.

“In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident,” the synopsis reads.

“Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth — something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined,” it adds.

As with “Cloverfield,” it’s that terrifying thing that will make all the difference in the movie once it comes out, so it’s rather pointless to venture guesses about what it could be.

For the sake of argument, though, more and more voices online are betting on some form of alien life that escapes from the train and then wrecks havoc on the town.

It could very well be that it was deliberately let loose among humans, to see how or if it could be contained at will.

Check out the trailer below and see whether this is a possibility. “Super 8” comes out in theaters on June 10.
