That the USS Enterprise would suffer intense damage in the upcoming “Star Trek Into Darkness” had been hinted at in previous trailers and posters but it’s this brand new trailer above that offers a clue as to the extent of the damage.

“The ship is dead, sir, she is dead.”

John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), the villain that will go after Cpt. James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and his team, is set to wreak havoc in the sequel to the 2009 film that rebooted the entire “Star Trek” franchise.

It’s just now that J.J. Abrams, a director famed for the secrecy he shrouds every one of his projects in, finally allows us a better appreciation of it and of the danger ahead.

Harrison’s reason for his actions remains unexplained and I’m sure you’ll agree it’s best that way.

“Star Trek Into Darkness” also stars Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Alice Eve, Simon Pegg and Anton Yelchin, and will be out on May 17.
