Wireless carrier Sprint and LG Electronics announced today the launch of a new mobile phone, LG Remarq, which comes in line with the operator's eco-criteria, and which adds to Sprint's portfolio of eco-friendly devices. According to the mobile phone carrier, the new device is set to become available for purchase for its users as soon as May 9, and will be offered for free upon the signing of a two-year contract agreement with the carrier and after a $19.99 instant rebate and $50 mail-in rebate.

According to Sprint, the launch of LG Remarq proves that it is committed to remain the leading U.S. telecoms company on Newsweek's Green Rankings, and that this is yet another green initiative it put in place in this direction. “LG Remarq gives the eco-minded consumer a way to stay connected with the people who matter most at an incredible price,” said Kevin Packingham, Sprint senior vice president-Product Development. “Sprint continues to lead the U.S. wireless industry with our commitment to environmental initiatives and products.”

The new mobile phone comes as a chic messaging device, featuring a full sliding QWERTY keyboard, as well as a 1.3-megapixel photo snapper, MP3 player, and a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 16GB of additional storage space. At the same time, the device comes with Bluetooth wireless technology on board, as well as with Instant Messaging capabilities, not to mention easy access to Facebook and Photobucket.

“Our research shows that consumers are passionate about making eco-friendly choices when purchasing their mobile phones,” said Ehtisham Rabbani, corporate vice president, marketing and innovation for LG Mobile Phones. “We're continually finding new ways to weave recyclable alternatives throughout our product line-up, continuing to show our commitment to change.”

When it comes to the eco-friendly specs of LG Remarq, we can count the fact that its outer casing is made of 19 percent recycled plastic, or that it is 87 percent recyclable. The handset comes with low levels of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFR), and meets the energy-efficiency standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. At the same time, its packaging is fully recyclable, and it comes with an online user manual. The LG Remarq also includes the Eco Calculator application through which users can calculate C02 reduction savings by walking and not driving.
