Sony Pictures is working hard to bring “Spider-Man,” the reboot, on the silver screen, changing everything about the film as compared to the previous 3 installments, from the leading lady to the villain. New details on these are out.

As fans must already know – and as we also informed you a while back – the part that was once Tobey Maguire’s will now go to British actor Andrew Garfield, who will be a younger Spider-Man.

Mary Jane too will be changed (she was played by Kirsten Dunst before), with Deadline reporting that Sony has decided to go with Emma Stone (“Easy A,” “Zombieland”) for the part.

However, that’s not the biggest change that the upcoming “Spider-Man” will entail, as it turns out that Mary Jane will not be the main love interest.

Therefore, the battle is for the female lead, which is different from what fans knew: she is Gwen Stacy, and was the original love interest in the Spidey comics.

“[The] contenders are Glee’s Dianna Agron, Mia Wasikowska, Georgina Haig and Dominique McElligott,” Deadline says of the actresses who are currently in negotiations for Gwen.

“Stacy, played in Spiderman 3 by Bryce Dallas Howard, is a plum part for the first installment of the 3D Marc Webb-directed reboot of Spider-Man, because she is the first love interest of the high school-aged Peter Parker, played by Andrew Garfield,” the e-zine further says.

“Mary Jane – played by Kirsten Dunst in the Sam Raimi-directed trilogy – becomes more pivotal in the later installments of the Spidey saga,” Deadline notes.

As for the villain, it seems Sony Pictures Entertainment is close to making a decision here as well, now talking about bringing Venom back as the main baddie in the reboot.

“Early unconfirmed talk: they want to bring back Venom and they are looking at Philip Seymour Hoffman,” Deadline says.

The new “Spider-Man” arrives in theaters on July 3, 2012, which means there’s still plenty of time left to decide who will be villain and who will play Gwen.

Andrew Garfield, the new and improved Peter Parker, has finished work on “The Social Network” (now running in theaters), which means he’ll soon be able to start properly training for Spidey.
