The company is still quite happy with its current PlayStation 3

Sony has made an official statement concerning the often rumored PlayStation 4, as well as the next generation of home consoles as a whole, saying that it will probably be the last of the three big hardware manufacturers to announce its new device.

Seeing as how console sales are decreasing in the last year, many people are expecting that Sony or Microsoft will follow the lead of Nintendo, which is set to release the Wii U at the end of the year on the global market, thus replacing its older Wii.

According to PlayStation France CEO Philippe Cardone, Sony won’t be doing such a thing anytime soon, as Nintendo is under serious pressure to replace the current Wii.

"It's true that there are many rumors, but I couldn't tell you anything," he told LePoint. "The Wii is pressed for time because it is in decline. In our case, we have a lot less pressure. We were the last to leave the PS3, we will probably be the last to announce something."

Cardone’s statement seemingly clashes with previous Sony comments, which said that it would be “undesirable” to once again release a console after Microsoft, like it did with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, which led to a major advantage for the Microsoft device.

Other Sony executives also revealed that the Japanese company wasn’t even thinking about the next PlayStation console, as the current PlayStation 3 still had a long life ahead of it, filled with quality exclusive games and extra features.

Even if a new home console like the PlayStation 4 would appear, Sony has mentioned that it will be sold right alongside the PS3, citing the continued success of the PlayStation 2, which is still selling plenty of units in certain regions of the world.

As of yet, at least according to Cardone, the Japanese company is in no hurry to release a new console.
