The company is focusing on the PlayStation 3 and the Vita

Sony Computer Entertainment boss Andrew House has once again discussed the issue of a PlayStation 4, saying that the company isn’t even contemplating the idea of a successor to the current PlayStation 3.

The PS3 has been around for over 5 years now and, while it can still support plenty of quality titles, rumors about its successor are flying around on the web, with more recent ones saying that the PS4 could be getting ready for a debut later this year.

Sony’s Andrew House begs to differ, however, saying that the company is still not worried about replacing the current console and that it’s “just entering into this great period for PS3.”

"I don't think we're contemplating talking about anything to do with future console iterations at this point,” the Sony executive told CVG.

He then highlighted just how successful the company was in keeping the PlayStation 2 relevant after more than 10 years since its release, hinting that the PlayStation 3 could still be sold alongside a PS4 when it eventually appeared.

"But one thing I always point to is that, somewhat in contrast to our major competitors, we have, particularly with PS2, managed the length of the lifecycle and ensured its profitability for our publishing partners for a much longer lifecycle than has been true of the competition,” House added.

The executive attributes this success to Sony’s unique characteristics, as the Japanese company really works together with local retailers, as opposed to its rivals.

"I would say that's in part because of the global reach of Sony from a distribution, infrastructure and marketing standpoint. Because in many markets, we work alongside really long-standing, established operations in electronics, we're able to migrate out into rather more emerging markets much more easily and sustainably than is possible for some of our competitors."

House’s comments echo previous statements from other Sony executives, who say that the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita are the most important devices right now for the Japanese company.
