A new, highly appealing mobile phone is now on its way to the market in Australia, namely the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY, which should hit the shelves in the country sometime in May, some of the latest reports suggest.

The new mobile phone was officially announced in mid-February during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, with Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system on board.

The new device comes with a nice range of new features included into the mix, such as enhanced gaming capabilities.

The Xperia PLAY is the first device in the world to be PlayStation certified, and also the first Android mobile phone to arrive on shelves with a sliding game pad.

Following the official unveiling of the new handset at the said MWC event, various wireless operators around the world confirmed plans to have it available on their airwaves, and it seems that Australian carriers are also set to join the party.

Reportedly, all four major wireless services providers in Australia would add the new smartphone to their offering, including Telstra, Vodafone, Three and possibly Optus.

Nothing was officially confirmed on this until now, nor were any price tags unveiled, but chances are that the phone would be released in the country sometime between May and June.

In addition to the said sliding game pad, the new handset comes with a 4-inch touchscreen display that can delvier a 480 x 854 pixels (FWVGA) resolution, along with a 1 GHz Scorpion ARMv7 application processor, and up to 400 MB of internal memory.

The specifications list of this device would also include 3G, WiFi, and Bluetooth connectivity options, along with GPS receiver, 3.5 mm audio jack, a 5.1 megapixel photo snapper on the back with auto focus, flash and video recording, as well as Wi-Fi Hotspot capabilities.

The mobile phone also comes with support for a wide range of Google services, as well as with access to the Android Market, to download and install applications on it. It would also include a series of pre-loaded games.
