The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week brought to the spotlight a series of very appealing devices, including the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY, the first smartphone in the world to be PlayStation certified.

Following the official unveiling of this device, wireless carriers around the world announced plans to add it to their offerings, including a series of UK operators.

However, it seems that some exclusivities on this device were still inked for the UK market, such as the upcoming availability of a white flavor of the handset at O2.

The wireless carrier has just announced the signing of an exclusivity deal for this phone version, and even provided some photos with the device, for your viewing pleasure.

For those out of the loop, we should note that the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY is an Android-based smartphone that sports a sliding gaming pad.

The phone comes with a large touchscreen display, a 4-inch 480 x 854 pixels one, complemented by the said sliding pad, with a digital D pad, two analogue touch pads, and two shoulder buttons, along with the four popular PlayStation icons: circle, cross, square and triangle.

Moreover, the new handset is powered by a 1 GHz Scorpion ARMv7 application processor, and sports 400 MB of internal memory, with a microSD memory card slot available for expanding the storage space to up to 32GB.

The specifications list of this device also includes WiFi and Wi-Fi Hotspot capabilities, along with Bluetooth, 3.5 mm audio jack, or aGPS.

On the back, the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY sports a 5.1 megapixel photo snapper with auto focus, flash and video recording capabilities.

Some of the main features that Sony Ericsson packed it with, we can count: TrackID, PlayNow, Google Talk, Sony Ericsson Timescape, access to Google Maps, Google Gallery 3D, YouTube, Android Market, or to social networking sites like Facebook or Twitter.

The phone runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It should land on shelves with a series of pre-loaded apps and games, including EA’s The Sims 3 and FIFA 10, GLU Mobile/Activision' Guitar Hero, or Gameloft’s Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell.
