Wireless carrier Three UK has just announced the availability of a new mobile phone on its airwaves, the Sony Ericsson X8, a touchscreen device that runs under Google's Android operating system.

The new device was launched last year in the company's Xperia family of phones, and was placed somewhere between the high-end Xperia X10, and the lower-level Xperia X10 mini.

The new mobile phone is already available for purchase in Three stores around the country, as well as on Three.co.uk, the wireless carrier's website.

“The Sony Ericsson X8 delivers great smartphone functionality at a very affordable price allowing our customers to make the most of our 3G network, which now covers over 97.3% of the population across the UK,” Sylvia Chind, head of Branded Devices, Three UK, said.

The new mobile phone comes to shelves with a 3-inch touchscreen, a 3.2-megapixel photo snapper, a great deal of capabilities, as well as access to thousands of applications available for download via the Android Market, for personalization purposes.

The main features of the new Android mobile phone include:

Four corners user interface for easy one hand use 3-inch capacitive scratch-resistant Touchscreen Android Market access to more than 200,000 applications 3.2 megapixel camera – snap and upload instantly to Facebook GPS for navigation with GoogleMaps Live wallpapers bringing your homescreen to life. The phone packs 128 MB of internal memory, complemented by a microSD memory card slot, sports Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, FM radio, multimedia player, Skype, access to Google services, and more.

According to the wireless carrier, the new Sony Ericsson X8 Android-based device is available for purchase for £15 a month, on The One Plan with All You Can Eat Internet, 5000 texts and 5000 Three to Three minutes for £25 per month.

The device was added to the carrier's PAYG offering too, with a price tag of £99.99 attached to it. On the carrier's website, the new device is available for purchase from here for pay monthly customers, and from here for PAYG users.
