Android 2.1 Eclair is the newest OS flavor that Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10 family of devices would enjoy, the company confirmed officially today, finally putting rumors on the possible arrival of Android 2.2 on these devices to a rest.

According to some of the latest reports around the Internet, the leading handset vendor won't deliver a newer OS flavor on its devices in the Xperia X10 family, which includes the Xperia X10, Xperia X10 mini and Xperia X10 mini pro.

Most probably, the Xperia X8 won't taste a newer OS flavor either, since its updates were tightly connected to those released of Xperia X10 devices.

Even so, Sony Ericsson is said to have committed to offering future enhancements on these devices, even if not through an operating system upgrade.

Previous reports on a possible update that would bring multi-touch to Xperia X10 were reportedly confirmed by the mobile phone maker, and the first quarter of the ongoing year was set as the time frame when they would land.

Of course, there's always the possibility of including a new OS version on your mobile phone through unofficial ROMs, but, since they are quite risky, users should think twice before giving them a try.

In related news, we learn that Sony Ericsson also committed to the delivery of newer OS flavors to the just unveiled Xperia Arc smartphone.

“We will upgrade the Xperia Arc to Honeycomb”, Nathan Vautier, MD of UK and Ireland for Sony Ericsson, confirmed at an event, a recent article on TechRadar reads.

Apparently, the company has learned from its mistakes, and it aims at providing users with newer software much faster than it did last year, when it launched Android 2.1 for Xperia X10 devices only in Q4, after promising it since Q2.

“The idea is to be a hell of a lot quicker in the future, as you lose momentum [if you don't keep up with the upgrades] even if you have a great looking product,” Vautier reportedly stated.

Undoubtedly, Sony Ericsson is set to focus more on the development of newer devices, running under the latest flavors of Google's Android OS, such as the long rumored PlayStation Phone, which should become official in February at MWC.
