Japanese Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson might have been late to the Android party, but it seems that the company is set to catch up with the competition, and the launch of a successor for the highly appealing Xperia X10 might be just the thing. This handset, supposedly set to become the next flagship Android device from Sony Ericsson, was spotted with the codename of Sony Ericsson Anzu next to it, and is expected to arrive on shelves as the X12.

According to a recent article on the Unofficial Xperia X10 Blog, the new mobile phone should be released on the market sometime in the first quarter of the next year, even if it was not announce as of yet.

Sony Ericsson, in case there are some unfamiliar with its habits, usually makes new devices available for purchase several months after the official unveiling.

The Xperia X10 suffered the same fate last year, as it was announced sometime in November, and it arrived on shelves only in February-March this year.

According to an anonymous tipster, the new device would run under Google's Android Gingerbread operating system.

Moreover, the new mobile phone is expected to arrive on shelves with a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, while sporting a very slim form factor, as well as a HDMI port.

The photo attached to this article allegedly shows this device, though it appears to be merely a prototype, running under Android 2.1, and not Gingerbread.

Another interesting detail on the new device would be the fact that Sony Ericsson puts it in the same category as the PlayStation Phone called “Zeus” that previously leaked into the wild.

Of course, there is still a great deal of unknowns when it comes to this device, but, in case it is the real deal, more info on the matter should emerge in the near future, that's for sure. Keep an eye on this space to learn additional details as they surface.

More photos with the device, along with some new details, can be found here.
