Sony Ericsson has announced today the release of two new handsets that are meant to show the company's commitment to environmental sustainability and green innovation, the C901 GreenHeart and Naite. In addition, the phone maker has also showcased the MH300 GreenHeart headset, another product that marks the launch of the GreenHeart programme, and which is one of the greenest headsets available on the market. According to the company, its portfolio of GreenHeart pioneer products is expected to expand in the future with new additions and innovations.

“Building on the established heritage of our parent companies, Sony Ericsson has worked continuously to become an industry leader in the area of removing harmful substances from the core of its phones and in creating industry leading energy efficiency chargers,” said Dick Komiyama, president, Sony Ericsson. “Today we are announcing the next step in our sustainability strategy – the GreenHeart pioneer products – which launch with two innovative new phones and a commitment to roll out these innovations across the broader portfolio in 2010 and 2011, allowing us to build a more sustainable business.”

The Sony Ericsson C901 GreenHeart comes to the market with an electronic, in-phone manual that replaces the paper version, saving this way more than 90% paper while also allowing for a more compact packaging. The phone's casing is made of more than 50% recycled plastics and sports an optimized display light sensor to drain less power from the battery. The phone will come with the MH300 GreenHeart headset, made up of 100% recycled plastics, and with a WalkMate application, which enables users to compare the steps they take with the equivalent journey travelled by car.

The specification list of the handset shows a 2.2-inch screen that boasts a 240 x 320 pixel resolution and support for 262,144 colors, along with a 5.0-megapixel camera with auto focus, face detection, smile shutter, Xenon flash and video recording, Bluetooth with A2DP, speakerphone, USB support, FM radio with RDS, media player, email, MMS, SMS and instant messaging capabilities, video streaming, Access NetFront Web browser, and more.

The Sony Ericsson Naite phone comes with the EP300 GreenHeart charger, a low-power charger that is among the first to come to the market, an Ecomate application that has been developed so as to help users make greener choices, and a Carbon Footprint Calculator that shows how much CO2 is saved when walking and not using a car. The device has been made using recycled plastics and features a more eco-friendly packaging that complements the low-power consumption charger.

The specs of Naite show a 2.2-inch screen, a 2.0-megapixel camera with picture blogging and video recording capabilities, media player, Bluetooth with A2DP, Access NetFront web browser, conference calling, speakerphone, video calling, email, Exchange ActiveSync, SMS, MMS and IM, FM radio with RDS, video streaming, support for Google Maps, USB mass storage and microSD memory card slot that complements the 100MB of internal memory it comes with.

The Sony Ericsson C901 GreenHeart comes with support for GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 UMTS/HSPA 900/2100 and is expected to start shipping in the second quarter of the ongoing year in selected markets in Ocean White. Naite features support for GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 UMTS HSPA 850/1900/2100 and should come to the market in the third quarter of the year in Vapour Silver.
