According to the latest news around the Web, Sony Ericsson might release on the US market a fresh handset on the same day that Sprint will launch the Palm Pre, namely the W995a, a device that was first mentioned back in February, when the manufacturer unveiled the W995.

The new Sony Ericsson W995a is a Walkman phone that has been developed to work on the wireless frequencies in North America, as the 900 / 2100MHz HSDPA radio has been replaced with an 850 / 1900 / 2100MHz version, allowing the handset to connect to 3.5G networks both in the country and outside it.

The specifications list of the phone includes a 2.6-inch QVGA display, an 8.1-megapixel photo snapper that features face detection, image stabilization and auto focus, Bluetooth connectivity, Wi-Fi capabilities, FM Radio with RDS, 3.5mm audio jack, AGPS, and a Memory Stick Micro memory card slot for additional storage space.

The device seems to have all the features that one would be able to find in any high-end phone, including the Access NetFront 3.4 web browser with RSS, Java, 3D, Motion Control Gaming, Video player, USB Port, 118MB of internal memory, Geo tagging capabilities, Speakerphone, MusicDJ, VideoDJ, TrackID technology.

The Sony Ericsson W995a is expected to retail for about $600 when coming to the market through SonyStyle. Although the price might seem to be a little too high for the phone, a quick look at its specs shows that it’s worth every penny.

It should turn into a flagship model in no time, as it includes sound enhancement features, as well as a nice range of multimedia functionalities. And until the phone actually arrives on the market and you will be able to discover for yourselves its capabilities, you should take a look at the hands-on pictures published by Engaged.
