Both Microsoft and Sony launched motion tracking controller in 2010, in the form of the Kinect and the PlayStation Move, but Nintendo says that competition is welcome and that the company will show the strength of its own solution with the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Speaking in a wide ranging interview with IGN Reggie Fils-Aime, who is the president and the chief executive officer at Nintendo of America, has stated, “I think the best example of how we continue to be distinctive and innovative is going to be Legend Of Zelda Skyward Sword.”

Skyward Sword is the first core Nintendo video game that will be using the Motion Plus add-on for the Wii Remote in order to offer a more accurate experience when the player uses his sword to slash or to block attacks.

The Motion Plus hardware has been available for quite some time but Nintendo has been weary of making it a requirement for its main franchises, fearing a split in the player base.

Approaching the subject of the apparent decline of the Nintendo Wii home console, he added, “That’s how we’re going to continue to drive Wii, moving into the future, regardless of what our competitors do. Not just our direct competitors, but all of our competitors. We have to have great content, and that’ll drive the business.”

Motion tracking has been the one unique selling point in terms of hardware for the Wii since launch and with the launch of Kinect and Move the Nintendo platform has seen its number one position in the hardware sales charts challenged, especially by the Xbox 360.

There are rumors that Nintendo is preparing a new home console, but while they always talk about more storage space and High Definition graphics, there is no mention of creating a more advanced motion-tracking system.
