South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung is gearing up for the release of a new software update for the popular Galaxy S smartphone, one that would bring Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the device, and some more info on when it would plan on making the update available emerged. Recently, Three UK has unveiled plans to make the software update available for its Galaxy S users in a matter of weeks, and it seems that the middle of this month might be the lucky time frame indeed.

A recent message that Samsung Finland posted on its forum shows that the company aims at delivering Gingerbread to Finnish Galaxy S users in mid-April, and chances are that the software would arrive in other markets as well at that time.

However, this does should not be taken as a full confirmation of the upcoming availability of Android 2.3 Gingerbread for this smartphone for the worldwide market.

For those out of the loop we should note that the Android 2.2 Froyo software update landed on Galaxy S las year starting with the Nordic countries, and that it still hasn't arrived on all units out there.

With millions and millions of Galaxy S owners out there, it would make sense if the update to Gingerbread was released in phases, but this means that some users would taste it at a much later time.

In case there are some who missed previous posts on the mobile platform, we should note that it comes with a new user interface when compared to the previous releases of the OS, and that it also includes faster, more intuitive text input methods.

Some of the other features that it would arrive on Galaxy S with would include one-touch word selection and copy/paste, better power management and improved control over applications.

Moreover, it comes with Internet calling, Near-field communications, Downloads management, and a new camera application. Samsung is also expected to include a series of enhancements into the mix, so stay tuned to learn more on the matter.
