That might leave AMD, Nvidia and others without the world’s biggest GDDR5 supplier

Korean giant electronics company Samsung is currently the world’s biggest GDDR5 graphics memory manufacturer, but the company is rumored to be leaving the video memory world.

The market for graphics memory is a very demanding one. Products must respect tight standards, and volume is rather low when compared with normal DDR3 volume.

The funds required for proper and “on the edge” research and development are also considerable, and not many companies will gather up to put of the money for this, as it usually happens with the normal DDR3 memory.

Samsung is all about high volume and high profit. The market for GDDR5 doesn’t offer either of them.

This might also be a play by Samsung to get more development funds out of the interested parties, such as AMD or Nvidia.
