Resistance: Burning Skies is getting ready for its launch at the end of the month, so the game’s developer, Nihilistic, decided to show off a brand-new feature of the shooter, which can infect players with the Chimeran virus during multiplayer.

Resistance games have delighted quite a lot of PlayStation fans over the years by putting them in the shoes of soldiers during the 1950s fighting against the evil Chimera, a race of hostile aliens bent on subjugating humankind and turning them into their own brethren through the Chimeran virus.

In the upcoming Burning Skies installment, developer Nihilistic is taking this to a new level, as players can get infected during multiplayer matches.

While that sounds nasty, the infection is actually beneficial, as you get extra XP when you’re infected.

What’s more, thanks to the PS Vita’s near application, which allows players to get in touch with other Vita owners in their vicinity, this infection can spread, meaning they’ll also get a bonus in multiplayer.

“With new hardware comes an exciting new scope of uncompromised gameplay capabilities for the first FPS on PlayStation Vita” said Frank Simon, senior managing producer at Sony Computer America.

“Taking further advantage of the unique social connectivity of PlayStation Vita, while playing Resistance: Burning Skies in the dynamic new multiplayer mode, ‘near’ will enable players to become infected with the Chimeran virus for multiplayer bonuses – and ‘gift’ these to other PS Vita users”.

Resistance: Burning Skies has quite a few different multiplayer modes, including the traditional Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch ones, but also a special Survival mode, where one player embodies a Chimera and must hunt down the rest of the humans.

Combine the variety with this infection mechanic and it seems that the game might be a great choice for Vita owners who like to play online with others.

Resistance: Burning Skies is out on May 29, in North America, and May 30, in Europe. Until then, check out a video of Simon explaining the feature below.
