Human players need to hold off against the Chimera for as long as possible

After showing off two of the multiplayer modes in Resistance: Burning Skies earlier this month, developer Nihilistic Software has now presented a new one, in the form of the Survival mode, which sees humans and Chimera aliens fighting it out.

Resistance: Burning Skies is set to appear next month on the PlayStation Vita handheld console, offering a new first-person shooter experience set in the universe originally developed by Insomniac Games.

We’ve already heard quite a few things about the game’s single-player story, which sees players guide New Jersey fireman Tom Riley in his quest to save his family from the invading Chimera aliens, and checked out some details on the multiplayer modes included in the game.

After learning that Burning Skies will support online matches in which up to eight people can fight it out in Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch modes, fans can now enjoy the first details about Survival mode that will be available in the game.

“Survival mode pits the players against each other in a race to the finish where only the strong survive,” the developer said.

“Here’s how it works: in a battle of humans vs. Chimera, six players start as humans and two as Chimera. As the Chimera players make a kill, their human victims are resurrected as Chimera so the balance slowly shifts. As the battle continues, the winner is the human player who lasts the longest in a match. We keep a timer running as you play so you can track your progress.”

According to the studio, the mode will offer an intense experience, especially once the Chimera players start gaining the upper hand against the humans.

“We really wanted to offer something that was unique to Resistance, keeping with the franchise’s theme around humanity’s struggle to survive against overwhelming odds. We wanted the game to start relatively simple for the humans and then become increasingly harder over time, much like the way the Chimera invaded Asia, then Europe and then America in a flood. Previous Resistance games have had modes similar to this, but Survival is our own special twist to create a new mode that focuses on the balance of power changes.”

Tips for the online mode, according to Nihilistic, include staying in a single place, knowing where the Chimera players are going, and always moving in the shadows, so that enemies won’t know where you are.

Expect to hear some more details about Resistance: Burning Skies in the next few weeks, ahead of its release on May 29, in North America, and May 30, in Europe, for the PS Vita.
